Understanding Mental Health Needs

Understanding the Need

In the UK today, mental health challenges are not the exception, they are the norm.

  • Around 1 in 4 adults in England experiences at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any given year.
  • In any given week, 1 in 5 adults reports symptoms of a common mental health problem such as anxiety or depression.
  • Among children and young people aged 8 to 25, approximately 1 in 5 has a probable mental disorder.

These figures show that emotional distress, burnout, and mental overload are woven into everyday life for millions of people.

Mental Health Support Gap

The Support Gap

  • Only around 37–45% of people with a common mental health problem report receiving any treatment.
  • In 2023–24, 3.79 million people were in contact with mental health, learning disability, or autism services in England — almost 40% more than in 2018–19.

For many, support arrives late, inconsistently, or not at all.

Young People and Mental Health Waiting Times

Young People & Long Waiting Times

  • In 2023/24, 78,577 young people referred to CAMHS waited over a year for treatment.
  • More than 34,000 waited over two years.
  • Over half of young people report their mental health worsened while waiting for support.

Long waits don’t just pause support; they can actively worsen distress, reduce trust in services, and increase the risk of crisis.

Early Mental Health Support

Why Early, Accessible Support Matters

There is a large group of people who are struggling with stress, burnout, anxiety, or low mood, but are not yet in crisis.

  • They are at risk of deteriorating further
  • They may not meet clinical thresholds
  • They may not know where to turn

Public health initiatives like Every Mind Matters show that evidence-based digital tools can support mental wellbeing earlier and more proactively.

Mindscape Travels is designed to sit in this space: between coping alone and clinical crisis.
